The Senior Construction Estimator is responsible for leading the estimating process on complex construction projects from conceptual budgeting through final bid submission. This role plays a critical part in project pursuit strategy, cost accuracy, risk management, and collaboration with preconstruction, operations, and subcontractor partners. The ideal candidate brings deep estimating expertise, strong leadership skills, and the ability to influence project outcomes early in the development cycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead detailed quantity takeoffs, pricing, and cost estimates for medium to large-scale construction projects
- Prepare conceptual, schematic, design development, and GMP estimates
- Analyze drawings, specifications, and project requirements to identify scope, risks, and cost drivers
- Solicit, review, level, and evaluate subcontractor and supplier bids
- Develop and manage bid strategies, including scope reviews and value engineering alternatives
- Collaborate with project managers, superintendents, architects, engineers, and owners during preconstruction
- Identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining quality and constructability
- Participate in proposal preparation, bid presentations, and client meetings
- Maintain historical cost data and benchmarking for future estimates
- Mentor and support junior estimators and preconstruction staff
- Ensure estimates align with company standards, procedures, and financial goals
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 8–12+ years of construction estimating experience, preferably in commercial construction
- Proven experience leading estimates for large or complex projects
- Strong understanding of construction means and methods, materials, and labor pricing
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, On-Screen Takeoff, Sage, WinEst, Procore, Excel)
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Strong communication and negotiation abilities
- Ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines simultaneously
- Detail-oriented with a strong focus on accuracy and risk management
Preferred Experience
- Experience with negotiated work, CM at Risk, or design-build delivery methods
- Familiarity with value engineering and life-cycle cost analysis
- Prior leadership or mentoring experience
- Local market knowledge and subcontractor relationships
